The 2008 Annual McCall Winter Carnival takes place in McCall, Idaho January 25th through February 3, 2008.

Over the last 43 years, the carnival has established itself as one of the premiere winter community and family events of the Western United States.

While possibly best known for the breath-taking ice sculptures and Idaho State Snow Sculpture Championships, the carnival has grown to include a weeks worth of entertainment and fun.

McCall is a small resort community nestled on the shore of beautiful Payette Lake and is known as one of Idaho's most popular resorts. McCall was founded as a timber town and has grown into a popular year round destination. Located 100 miles north of Boise, McCall is just a two-hour drive along the Payette River Scenic Byway from its gateway city. McCall is home to Brundage Mountain, Ponderosa State Park, the U.S. Forest Service Smoke-jumper Base, and the annual Winter Carnival. McCall offers something for everyone throughout the year.

McCall's winter season generally starts in late November and runs until mid April. Brundage Mountain Resort is a favorite among skiers and snowboarders for it's friendly, family atmosphere and incredible powder skiing. The average annual snowfall at the resort is 300 inches. At McCall's altitude of 5,000 feet, accumulation is typically less than 48 inches due to repeated settling and thawing. Winter activities include alpine and Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice-skating, Lift-Served Snow Tubing, or just sitting by a fire. Winter in McCall also brings the Annual Winter Carnival, a tradition since 1924.

The McCall area is characterized by mild summers influenced by the mountains, lakes, altitude, and latitude. In the summer months Payette Lake offers many activities including swimming, boating, water skiing, and fishing. The McCall area in general also offers bike riding, hiking, camping, fishing, and golf.

In addition to the amazing summer and winter activities, any time in McCall is a great time to visit the Central Idaho Cultural Center, Valley County Museum, State Fish Hatchery, the U.S. Forest Service Smokejumper base, or the beautiful downtown area.

For over 40 years visitors have enjoyed the spectacular snow sculptures doting the streets through out the community. They come in all shapes, sizes and themes from small to tall (over 20 feet!).

In the beginning of this local tradition, residents constructed the sculptures in front of their homes. Gradually, the sculptures moved downtown where local businesses carry on the spirit of fun and festival. Snow sculpturing has developed into an event that receives national recognition, with our teams going forward to compete in international events! In addition to enjoying over many entrants around town, visitors take part in a two full weeks worth of activities.

Tamarack Resort is located in Central Idaho, just 90 miles north of the capital city of Boise. The Frank Church Wilderness – the largest wilderness area in the lower the 48 – lies at Tamarack’s doorstep spreading eastward and covering six national forests. Tamarack offers a signature combination of unspoiled natural beauty, a distinct four-season climate, and convenient regional access.

THE MOUNTAIN: Winter 2004-2005 was Tamarack Resort’s inaugural ski season. A total of nine aerial lifts and five surface lifts are proposed for Tamarack to serve the more than 600 acres of groomed trails and 1,100 acres of beautiful, ski-able terrain.

THE MEADOW: The Robert Trent Jones II Signature Golf Course, Osprey Meadows, slopes gently down from its starting point near the Village. It moves across dry meadows and between large preserved wetlands. Greens have been placed against a backdrop of aspens, on the lakeshore, and between stands of mature ponderosa pines on the mountainside.

THE LAKE: At Lake Cascade, a multitude of lake activities exist from waterskiing and wakeboarding to kayaking and sailing, along with three designated bird sanctuaries on the nearby shoreline.

History of McCall

McCall was named for Tom McCall a prominent town leader who arrived in 1891 to homestead. Unlike Roseberry, it was a wild and woolly place, notorious for it's lakeside whorehouses, dance halls and gambling establishments (including the famous Harrah's Casinos). Until the early 1980's firearms were still allowed in local bars.

Mining and timber were McCall's chief industries driving the town's rapid evolution into a bustling lake port. Steamboat Lyda - plying the length of Payette Lake - was a fast and economical alternative to wagon transport, serving the logging industry and the Warren and Marshall Mountain Mining Districts (in Warren you can still see placer mine tailings made by the more than 30,000 indentured Chinese workers). The Brown Tie and Lumber Company was the area's largest employer and they remain actively involved in the community. In 1914 the town was briefly renamed Lakeport but the local residents demanded it be restored to McCall.

To alleviate the tedium of McCall's long winters, in 1924 local resident and Olympic ski champion Cory Engen, together with a group of volunteers, founded Winter Carnival. They created ice sculptures and organized dog sled races, commemorating the sled dogs used to carry the U.S. mail when snow was too deep to use horses. The first races were held between Lardo at the mouth of Payette Lake (reputedly named when a large wagon carrying lard and flour overturned into the Payette River) and McCall on a mile-long course. By 1926 the races were attracting top sledders and twelve year old local Warren Brown won the Tom Geelan Cup and gained national recognition when he placed second in the championship race in Ashton Idaho.

McCall today is a thriving resort community, proud of its varied heritage and its continuing and constant commitment to the Heartland of Idaho - the Long Valley.
